Dr. Banwell's clinical and research focus is in the areas of pediatric multiple sclerosis and neuroimmune disorders, with specific expertise in neuroimaging. She has led a large North American 17-year prospective study of clinical outcomes, genetics, immunology, and neuroimaging features of MS in children. Dr. Banwell led the international diagnostic criteria panel for myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody associated disorder (MOGAD) and is now Chair of the International MOGAD Research Consortium. She has been a member of the international diagnostic criteria committee for multiple sclerosis (McDonald panel)since 2010, and recently co-chaired the international Pathways to Cure meeting for MS collaborative research.
